In the last weeks of my pregnancy my friend Beth, who didn’t have kids yet either, came to my door bearing good wishes and a stack of novels. “I thought you might like to read these once the baby comes and you stop going to work,” she offered. That made sense. I should have tons […]
Why Families Today Have No Time
In my life before motherhood, I led time management training sessions for employees of a big company. I indoctrinated everyone in the Franklin-Covey system for managing time. Before the age of iPhones, I kept my own binder-size day-planner and later a Palm Pilot at my side to manage my own time. But they were no […]
As families across the country face a week (or more!) with kids out of school, parents who may or may not have days off themselves, and competing demands for who wants to do what with their time, I thought I’d share a facilitation tool I’ve adapted for our family when we have extended family […]
How Twitter Helped Me Beat My Monday Morning Funk
Last Monday morning I found myself stuck to the chair in my kitchen. I just couldn’t seem to make myself move from the kitchen to my home office to get started on the various projects of the day. So I tweeted my malaise to the Twitterverse.
“I.am.procrastinating.”
My friend @micheledortch replied quickly.
“I […]
My 6 Fave Discoveries from 2010
As a Happy New Year gift, I wanted to share 5 of my favorite things I discovered in 2010 – along with one RE-discovery. Hope you’ll share yours too!
1. CaringBridge
When a friend or family member has a serious medical crisis, CaringBridge makes it easy to keep everyone updated […]
As my daughter approaches middle school, my anxiety about college increases and I feel a looming pressure on us (okay probably me) to spend time making sure our daughter is in the right school, has access to the right extracurricular activities to be able to get into college – given that getting into college is […]
Our Favorite New Year’s Tradition – Making Resolutions Together
I’ve always been a New Year’s Resolutions sort of person, but the process became so much more powerful about ten years ago when my husband and I started making them together. Our New Year’s Resolutions ritual was one of many experiences that helped me realize one of the key points of my book,
Family Strife: Mom & Dad Need to Talk About Who Does What
Check out my Q&A with journalist Maja Beckstrom from Twin Cities Pioneer Press:
Q. What did you expect life would be like after becoming a mother?
A. I expected I would be able to continue my career. I was a manager of training and development for Earthlink. And, like a lot of […]
Secrets of Stress-Free Family Time
I ran across this great article, by Redbook Magazine‘s Jennifer Matlack, titled “Secrets of Stress-Free Family Time.” In the article she talks about how to downshift from a busy day so you can relax and reconnect with the ones you love.
The first 10 minutes after you arrive home set […]

Dump Instacart for Dumpling. Better for shoppers and better for customers. My experience shopping with Dumpling for both myself and in-laws has been amazing.
Stop using Instacart and switch to Dumpling which allows shoppers to set up their own small business & set their own rates. Plus you establish a relationship with a shopper who knows you. Better for everybody. http://Dumpling.us
1/ Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 310
What a joy watching Fauci's press conf. today. Last yr must have been torture for him, a brilliant man of great integrity. How liberating to speak truth w/o looking over his shoulder, & how uplifting to listen to him! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GJMDYZ2LNcWe are building a partnership with the American people to confront COVID-19.
A partnership rooted in transparency and science.
And together, we will mount an effective response to the pandemic that gets us all back to our lives and loved ones: https://www.whitehouse.gov/priorities/covid-19/I am honored to be the first male spouse of an American President or Vice President. But I'll always remember generations of women have served in this role before me—often without much accolade or acknowledgment. It’s their legacy of progress I will build on as Second Gentleman.
I agree with Europe: Wearing medical-grade masks will be important to slow the spread of the B.1.1.7 strain. We have consistent evidence that single-layer cloth masks are not as effective as surgical masks, and N95 or KN95 masks are even better. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/europe-coronavirus-masks-regulations/2021/01/20/23463c08-5a74-11eb-a849-6f9423a75ffd_story.html

Squeezed for Time? Manage Energy Instead
Who is most squeezed for time these days? I can make a pretty good argument that today’s mothers and fathers are more squeezed than just about anyone else. In fact my book, This is Not How I Thought It Would Be: Remodeling Motherhood to Get the Lives We Want Today has a whole […]
